Why is the Exhaust a Vital Part of Your Car?
CONTROLLING EMISSIONS
With all of the fuel that must be burned to create the combustion needed to propel a vehicle forwards, it’s no surprise a number of noxious gases are generated as a by-product. Many of these can be particularly damaging. For example – (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, phosphorus, lead and nitrogen monoxide).
This vital component, what’s known as a catalytic converter”, transfers harmful hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide into water vapour and carbon dioxide. These are elements that are not quite as dangerous for the environment. It is not technically illegal to own a car without a catalytic converter, but there are laws that govern the amount of dangerous emissions a vehicle can create. A car without this component (or a worn down one) would surely be in breach of this.
REDUCING TEMPERATURE
The exhaust system is crucial for ensuring that the high temperatures produced during combustion are recirculated back into the chamber. Many of the vehicles that may come into contact with the exhaust system also have preventative measures put in place to stop excessive heat from passing into other vulnerable parts. These heat management components include heat shields, thermal barrier coating and heat wrap, all working to absorb or dissipate the heat accordingly.
SOUND CONTROL
The process can be an extremely noisy one, because of the nature of combustion. Therefore, the exhaust system needs to reduce the noise created, through a part known as the muffler. This component works as a silencer, and consists of a metal box that holds a number of “baffles”, tubes that are sometimes perforated to absorb sound energy.
OXYGEN READINGS
Exhaust systems contain a sensor that detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas makeup. Sending a message back to the computer’s onboard computer, this helps to regulate the amount of fuel required by the engine. This leads to a far greater level of fuel efficiency.
Regular examinations by experienced mechanics will prevent major issues with your vehicle further down the line, since your vehicle will be running at an optimum level.
